The Benefits of Annual Wellness Exams

The Benefits of Annual Wellness Exams

Our pets are family, and we all want them to live long, healthy lives. Annual wellness exams are an important part of keeping pets healthy. While virtual visits and AI tools can be helpful, nothing replaces a hands-on, nose-to-tail exam by a licensed veterinarian.

During a physical exam, veterinarians use their hands, eyes, and ears to check your pet’s health by:

  • Checking body weight and body condition
  • Examining lumps or bumps
  • Feeling the abdomen for pain or masses
  • Checking the teeth and mouth for dental problems
  • Listening for heart murmurs or breathing issues

Young pets often have fewer medical problems, but regular visits still matter. Seeing your veterinarian every year helps build a long-term relationship and allows him or her to notice changes in your pet’s health as they age.

Think your indoor-only cat or the dog that rarely leaves your yard doesn’t need preventive care? Think again!  All pets should have routine health exams, core vaccines, and parasite prevention to stay as healthy as possible. Not every pet needs every vaccine or medication, but yearly visits allow you and your veterinarian to discuss:

  • Your pet’s lifestyle
  • Possible disease risks
  • The best preventive health plan for your pet

Visits every six to twelve months depending on your pet’s age will help reduce exposure to disease and may prevent illness before it starts.

Animals are naturally good at hiding pain and illness. Because of this, health problems may not be obvious until they become serious. Regular exams help detect issues early, when treatment is often easier and more successful.

Preventive care may include:

  • Routine physical exams
  • Periodic blood testing
  • Vaccines for common diseases such as parvovirus and feline leukemia
  • Medications to prevent parasites like heartworms, fleas, and ticks

Of course, accidents and emergencies can happen, and veterinarians are always here to help in those situations. However, early detection and management of chronic diseases—such as heart disease, diabetes, and kidney disease—often leads to much better outcomes.

Preventive care can also stop problems before they begin. For example:

  • It is much easier-and less expensive!-to prevent a flea infestation than to eliminate fleas once they spread through a home.
  • Using monthly parasite prevention is far easier than treating intestinal worms after a pet becomes infected.

Some parasites can even affect people, making prevention important for both pets and the families who care for them.

It may be tempting to skip annual exams for young, healthy pets. In reality, yearly wellness visits—along with vaccines and parasite prevention—are essential for keeping pets healthy and can often save money by catching problems early.
