The Joys and Hassles of Living with Two Dogs

Marty and Frankie take over my sofa every night!

After this looong cold winter, I thought we could all use a little humor, so I decided to describe my typical day with my 2 dogs, Frankie and Marty.  So, my day starts like this.  My husband gets up at 7AM to let Frankie and Marty outside and to feed them.  After gobbling their food down in 30 seconds, they launch their furry bodies at the bed to pounce on me and push their way under the covers.  After several minutes of shifting around and trying to lick each others' ears, they finally settle down and rest.  This lasts for about 5 minutes until one of them hears a noise (which usually turns out to be hubby in the kitchen or basement) at which time they burrow their way out of the covers and run out of the bedroom barking.  Satisfied that the threat has been averted, they return to the bed and under the blankets once again.  This goes on several times until I have had enough and decide to get up.

Afternoons consists of sleeping for short periods of time, play-fighting in the house, jumping at the back door in order to be let outside, getting muddy in the yard then trying to run away before getting their feet wiped, keeping the house safe by barking at unseen threats in the front yard and fighting over toys, even though we have 2 of every toy.

Around three o’clock, they begin their campaign to remind us that it is soon feeding time, even though they are not actually fed until 5PM.  They will pace around the living room, walk into the kitchen then back to the living room to stare at us as if to say, “Isn’t it time for dinner?”  As it gets closer to five, they pick up the pace and start jumping on our laps, trying to lick our ears and becoming more and more impatient.  When one of us finally asks, “Frankie.  Marty.  Is it time?!”  They become very excited and begin racing around the house.  After all that fuss for two hours, their food is inhaled in under a minute.

After dinner, they usually play and chase each other for a while.  Around 7 or 8 PM, they stage a take-over of my couch, falling asleep in a pile and kindly leaving a generous 12 inch area for me to sit on.  And so, I spend the evening vying for space on my own couch to watch TV or read while the dogs sleep.  It is usually somewhat uncomfortable, but I don’t have the heart to move them because they do look cute when they are asleep and, best of all, they are finally quiet!

So, there you have it--my dog-day routine.   They can be rambunctious and obnoxious, and I may never have my sofa to myself again, but I wouldn’t change it for the world!
