Why Do Dogs and Cats Have Tails?

We all love to see our dogs’ tails wagging when they greet us or see a cat’s tail happily wrapping around our legs when they see us. But, do tails serve a purpose? After all, some pets, such as Manx cats or Bulldogs have no tails or very short tails.  What are those tails for?

  • Tails help with balance. Cats use their tails to help maintain balance when walking along a narrow perch. Dogs may also use their tails for balance and they may aid dogs like a rudder while swimming.  Of course, if a pet loses his or her tail or is born without a tail, he or she will adapt.
  • Tails help with communication.  Both dogs and cats use their tails to help communicate mood to humans and other animals. That rapidly swishing, whipping cat tail usually means your cat is agitated or angry. A puffed-up tail means she’s frightened. A tail that is straight up or slightly curved like a question mark means your cat is happy and may be ready to play. A gently swishing tail means she is content.
  • Dogs generally wag their tails back and forth when happy. A stiff tail that is straight up or out may indicate excitement or agitation. When a dog tucks his tail under his body, he is scared.  Interestingly, puppies do not begin to wag their tails until they are about 6 weeks old.
  • Dogs and cats also have gland at the bases of their tails that may serve as chemical signals to other animals.
  • Tails may be used by some breeds to help keep warm.  Northern breeds such as Huskies and Malamutes curl their thick, furry tails around their noses for warmth but of course other breeds of dogs and cats may do this, too.

While a tail is not necessary for a pet to live a happy life, they do help with balance and communication and it’s always a happy sight to see a dog wagging his tail or a cat lazily swishing her tail.
