The North American Veterinary Conference: Coninuing Education for Vets

Hello from Orlando!

It is once again time for one of the largest veterinary conferences, the North American Veterinary Conference (NAVC). Here, veterinarians from all fifty states as well as over 1000 veterinarians from 80 countries around the world convene to update themselves on the newest medical practices, drugs and equipment in the veterinary field. In 2016, over 7,000 veterinarians and 1,613 veterinary technicians attended the conference held each winter in sunny Orlando.
Veterinary medicine remains an exciting field, constantly striving to change and better our chosen profession. It is exciting to see so many people in one place passionate about their careers and passionate about animals. I am fortunate to be able to attend this year and to meet up with some old friends as well as brush up on such diverse subjects as feline medicine, behavioral medicine, the best age at which to perform neutering, and new treatments for allergic dogs.
There are lectures and labs covering all facets of veterinary medicine including large animal, zoo animal, exotics, wildlife and any aspect of small animal medicine you can imagine. There are classes about dentistry, alternative medicine, surgery, emergency care, dermatology: the list goes on and on!
While most of my days will be spent in the lecture halls, I do hope to enjoy the Florida weather and have a bit of fun as well!  I did enjoy hearing Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs fame speak at the opening ceremonies and we plan to spend a day at Universal Studios Theme Park after the conference ends.
Of course, the goal of continuing education is to keep things fresh and to learn about advances in veterinary medicine. So, I hope to return with new ideas and confirmation that we are doing the best job that we can do as veterinarians at Patton Veterinary Hospital. See you all soon and stay warm in Pennsylvania!
