National Veterinary Technician Week

Help PVH Celebrate National Veterinary Technician Week!

We at Patton Veterinary Hospital have an amazing team of nurses and we invite everyone to help us celebrate and thank the wonderful women who make up much of our support staff.  October 16-22, 2016 marks National Veterinary Technician Week created over 20 years ago to help educate the public about what veterinary technicians do, and to celebrate and thank those who have chosen to make veterinary technology their profession.

Veterinary technicians (or nurses, the terminology our hospital and many others prefer) are called upon to do many tasks in the course of a day, and our doctors could not get along without them.  Our nurses take down histories from our clients, perform record keeping duties, make phone calls, administer vaccines and medications, work as pharmacy techs, monitor anesthesia, make sure patients are warm, dry and clean, draw blood samples, perform laboratory tests, and assist in all forms of patient care. But, most importantly, they provide love and support to their patients and to our clients.

They are advocates for patient health and comfort.  They are intelligent, respectable and tough.  Veterinary nurses are at risk for being bitten, scratched, and pooped and peed upon on a daily basis.  The job of a veterinary nurse requires varied talents and is hard, dirty work. They witness every day the joys of a new puppy or kitten as well as the heartbreak of losing a beloved pet.  This job leaves scars on their skin and on their hearts, but they find it in themselves to return day after day as it is their calling.

Our nurses have strong skills, strong values and strong hearts and they do their jobs day in and day out, sometimes missing lunch or staying longer than their scheduled shift with few complaints because they love your pets as much as they love their own and they want to keep your pets as healthy as possible.

Each veterinary nurse takes the following oath:  “I solemnly dedicate myself to aiding animals and society by providing excellent care and services for animals, by alleviating animal suffering, and by promoting public health. I accept my obligations to practice my profession conscientiously and with sensitivity, adhering to the profession's Code of Ethics, and furthering my knowledge and competence through a commitment to lifelong learning.”

Please join us this week in celebrating the fantastic team of nurses at Patton Veterinary Hospital who uphold this oath each and every day.  We thank you all for your service and dedication to the job of being a veterinary technician!
