Pot-Bellied Pigs at Patton!

Pot-Bellied Pigs at Patton!

Did you know that Patton Veterinary Hospital sees pot-bellied pigs?  It’s true!  We have several porcine patients who need routine care just like cats, dogs and other exotic pets.  One of our patients is even employed as a “therapy pig” visiting nursing homes to provide comfort and companionship.

Pot-bellied pigs are not for everyone, but these unusual oinkers can make wonderful pets for the right person.  Pigs are intelligent, sensitive and curious creatures.  They can be trained to do certain tricks or tasks and many can be housetrained.  Pigs need environmental enrichment, toys and time to root in the dirt and grass.  Pot-bellied pigs can be naughty if they become bored and will often open doors and cabinets and can be destructive.

In order to make a good pet, your pig should be spayed or neutered.  Pigs that are not spayed or neutered may become aggressive and demanding due to hormonal changes.  Pigs also need routine vaccinations and often need to have their hooves and tusks trimmed.  Healthy pigs require a special diet to prevent them from becoming overweight.  And even so-called mini or “teacup” varieties are not always small.  Pot-bellied pigs require exercise, mental stimulation and lots of love!  Also, keep in mind, owning a pig requires a long term commitment.  These sweet swine can live on average 15-20 years.

If you own a pot-bellied pig that needs care or spay/neuter surgery or are thinking of purchasing or adopting a pig, remember that several of our veterinarians, including Drs.Doug and Kevin Schmidt and Dr. Spencer, perform surgery on and provide medical care to these special pets.  Make sure to do your research and make sure that your area is zoned for owning pigs before purchasing a pot-bellied pig.

As Winston Churchill once said, “I am fond of pigs.  Dogs look up to us.  Cats look down on us.  Pigs treat us as equals.”  So true!
