A Salute to Veterinary Technicians

Celebrating National Veterinary Technician Week

October 12-18 is National Veterinary Technician Week.  Patton Veterinary Hospital is proud to pay tribute to our nurses, the unsung heroes of the veterinary world.  Vet techs are fearless, tireless, Jacks (or Jills!) of all trades.  They do many tasks without which our hospital could not function.  Veterinary nurses provide excellent care to our hospitalized and surgical patients.  They come in early, stay late and clean up unspeakable messes on a daily basis.  They always advocate for what is best for your pets.  In spite of, or maybe because of this, they love what they do, and they do it with a smile. This is not always easy with anal glands in your hair or urine on your scrub top!

To say our veterinary technicians are multi-talented is an understatement.  Our nurses draw blood, place IV catheters and give injections.  They trim nails, express anal glands and clean ears.  They fill and administer medications and provide information and education to our clients. They field phone calls from worried pet parents.  They are surgical assistants, dental hygienists, anesthetists, and X-ray and laboratory technicians.  They make sure pets are warm, fed and comfortable and they can often be found giving a scratch behind a pet’s ear, putting a “warmie” in a cage, or cuddling a hospital or surgery patient.  They work hard to keep us veterinarians on time--especially Dr. Schmidt!  :) --, take patient histories and often have the dangerous task of muzzling aggressive dogs or holding fractious cats who are less than happy to be receiving veterinary services.  They are some of the most compassionate and least squeamish people you will ever meet, and they pour their hearts and souls into their jobs.

In short, our nurses are an integral part of making our hospital run smoothly, and we would not be able to do what we do without their help.  So, a huge shout-out to all our nurses—Patton Veterinary Hospital Technicians are the best!  We thank each of you for all your hard work and support!

Please join us in celebrating our fabulous nurses by saying a big “thank you” this week!
