Cat Grooming

MY CAT IS 17 YEARS OLD AND NOT CLEANING HERSELF VERY WELL, HER FUR IS GETTING MATTED. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN SPRAY ON HER TO DETANGLE HER FUR?

Hi Rebecca,

Many older cats have difficulty keeping themselves groomed. Brushing your cat regularly and using a commercial de-tangling spray (available at most pet stores) or leave-in conditioner may help. A small amount of mineral or olive oil mixed with water and sprayed on the coat then combed through may also be tried.

If your cat has large mats that are tightly adhered to the skin and cannot be combed out, she may need to be shaved instead. Do not try to cut mats with scissors as you could accidentally injure your cat. If you are unable to remove the mats or to shave her at home, please contact a groomer or see your veterinarian.
